Why ash is washed, never wiped
Ash and soot are gritty and a little oily. Wiped dry, they smear across the glass and drag grit with them, which can leave fine scratches. After the Atlantic Fire burned west of Sunrise in June 2026, a lot of west-side glass carried exactly that film. West-facing panes also bake the film on in the afternoon sun. Screens hold even more of it than the glass does.
The glass is wetted first and washed with plenty of water so nothing is dragged, then squeegeed. Screens are washed separately, because a sooty screen keeps shedding onto the clean pane behind it. Book after the smoke has cleared. Tracks get vacuumed as well, because ash collects in them and grinds when the window slides.
