Lime-softened tap, spotted glass
Margate runs its own water plant and lime-softens the water, so the tap water in the house is not what spots the windows. The spotting comes from irrigation that pulls from a canal or a well, which carries minerals and sometimes iron. The heads run two set days a week, and the same panes get hit each time. That is also why upstairs panes on a two-story rarely spot: the sprinkler never reaches them.
Fresh spotting comes off in the normal clean. Spotting that has baked on for several summers can etch into the glass, and that takes a mineral remover pane by pane and sometimes only lightens. Michael checks one pane before quoting. Turning the heads away from the house is what keeps the next round off.
