The fighter

Two tapes.

Every fight poster carries a tale of the tape: reach, weight, record. Michael has one for the cage and one for the truck, and the second one is built on the first.

The story

Four places, one standard.

  1. 01

    2014 · Cresco, Iowa

    A town of four thousand.

Michael grew up in northeast Iowa and wrestled from the time he could walk. Three state titles and a 166-8 high school record, in a state where high school wrestling is the sport and a loss gets talked about at the gas station.

  2. Michael Blockhus in a PureClean polo, looking at the camera02

    2019 · Minneapolis

    Gopher. Big Ten finalist. All-American.

After a year at Northern Iowa he transferred to the University of Minnesota and started three seasons in the Big Ten, the deepest conference in college wrestling. He made a Big Ten final, beat Iowa in a match the Star Tribune wrote a column about, and in 2023, on his third trip to nationals, placed eighth at the NCAA Championships at 149 pounds. That made him an All-American. That is the part of the resume the cage is built on: seven years of weight cuts, five a.m. practices and losing in front of a crowd and coming back the next week.

  3. Michael in profile, wand over his shoulder03

    2023 · Deerfield Beach

He gave up his last year to fight.

Michael walked away from a final season of college eligibility to turn pro. His first fight was in Bellator, one of the two biggest promotions in the sport, and he finished it: TKO over Eli Mefford, 2:43 of the first round. He fights at featherweight, 145 lb, and trains at Kill Cliff FC in Deerfield Beach, one of the top gyms in MMA and fifteen minutes from most of the driveways on this site. A fight camp is eight to ten weeks of two sessions a day. The middle of the day is when he washes houses.

  4. 04

    2024 · Coral Springs

    Pure Clean, January 2024.

A fighter's schedule leaves the middle of the day open and a fighter's habits don't switch off. Pure Clean started as one man, one truck, and the same standard he brings to the gym. It still is. He quotes it, he does it, he walks it with you when it's done.

MMA

What the cage taught him.

Four things from fight camp that show up on your driveway. None of them are metaphors.

  • 01

    Weight cuts are prep

You do not make 145 the week of the fight. You make it in the eight weeks before. Same with a roof: the wash is easy, the prep is the job. Plants covered, downspouts checked, the right mix for the tile.

  • 02

Nobody corners you at a house

In the cage the corner tells you what you cannot see. On a job there is no corner, so Michael walks every elevation before he starts and walks it again with you before he leaves.

  • 03

    The tape does not lie

Fighters watch film of every loss. Michael keeps photos of every job, before and after, and looks at the ones that did not come out the way he wanted. That is why the black stays gone on his driveways.

  • 04

Show up on the bad days

Two sessions a day for ten weeks means training when you would rather not. It is the same muscle that gets a truck to your house at 9 a.m. in August with the humidity at ninety.

How he works

Habits from the mat, on the job.

Nothing here is a slogan. It is how a job with Michael actually goes.

  • The same guy every time

No dispatcher, no rotating crew. The person who answers the phone is the person on the ladder.

  • The right tool, not the biggest one

Soft wash where pressure would do damage. Surface cleaner where it earns its keep. Nothing on a roof but a low-pressure pump.

  • A number, not a range

Photos or a quick visit, then one price for the job. Nothing gets added once the truck is in the driveway.

  • Walk it before the truck leaves

You look at the work together. If something got missed, it gets done then, not on a callback.

On the job

The man behind the wand.

See the work
  • Crew on a ladder washing a two-story modern home
  • Michael soft washing with a mist of solution in the air
  • Crew pulling hose off the rig on a paver driveway
  • Michael pushing the surface cleaner toward the camera
  • Rinsing stacked stone and glass on a modern exterior
  • Michael coiling hose after a job
