Barrel tile on the Golf Village's oldest homes
Sunrise Golf Village's Spanish-eclectic houses were built with barrel tile from around 1960, and many roofs have been replaced over the decades while keeping the look. Barrel tile is porous and holds Gloeocapsa in every curve, and the canals running through the neighborhood keep the air damp. The curves also trap leaves and seed pods, which hold water against the roof.
Barrel tile cracks when it is stepped on in the wrong place, and older tile does so more easily. It is walked only on the laps and near the ridges, and worked from a ladder elsewhere. Any cracked or slipped tile spotted during the look is pointed out before a quote is given. Gutters are flushed at the end so the runoff does not sit in them.
